Coming Soon to TASIS: An Ice Rink with a View

TASIS The American School in Switzerland will soon enhance its majestic campus with a beautiful synthetic ice rink designed to build community spirit and engage students in a variety of wholesome activities, including hockey, figure skating, broomball, and curling.

The 12x6-meter rink will be placed on the small field outside Belvedere, an elevated classroom building and Middle School dormitory that offers a stunning view of snow-capped mountains, palm trees, and Lake Lugano.

Soon these students will be gliding on ice.

The new rink, which was proposed by Physical Education Department Chair and Director of Residential Life Tom Lill, will be primarily used by physical education students in grades Kindergarten–10 during the school day, by the Elementary and Middle School’s After-School Activities programs in the afternoon, and by Middle and High School boarding students on the weekends. The School will provide all necessary equipment, including ice skates offered in a wide variety of sizes.

“This exciting campus addition will provide a valuable outdoor space on campus for students and faculty to play or watch some hockey, curling, or broomball, make new friendships, create shared experiences, and have fun,” said Mr. Lill, who has worked at TASIS since 2010 and became the Physical Education Department Chair earlier this year.

The rink is scheduled to be installed in late February by the Swiss-based company Glice—the market leader for premium synthetic ice—and the TASIS Maintenance Department. Glice’s ultra glide-enhanced molecular structure offers the industry’s lowest coefficient of friction, resulting in the highest glide factor, best grip, and lowest blade abrasion. It is an ecological technology that functions without the use of electricity or water.
