Results ZIS invitational GVB September 9, 2017

Having just completed tryouts and with only day of practice together, the Girls Volleyball team traveled to Zurich for its first tournament of the season. The Varsity squad was placed in a pool with the host, Zurich International School (ZIS), and the tournament favorite, Leysin American School (LAS). The Tigers played excellent games with smart setting from Luisa Albuquerque Speiski '19 and great attacks from Jennifer Kraemer '20, and they emerged at the top of the group after winning back-to-back, tie-breaking games.

Heading into the semifinal, the girls felt confident and were quickly improving their communication skills to become one cohesive unit. Alexandra Pohl '19 led with beautifully placed tips while Arina Kolesnikova '18 and Virginia Italia '19 delivered strong serves. Charlotte Colombo '18 made some beautiful down-the-line hits that earned the team several points. Going into the third three-set game of the day, however, the Tigers wore down and lost by two points in the final set. Unfortunately, in order to get back to Lugano in time for the High School Boat Dance, the girls needed to forfeit the third-place game.

The Junior Varsity team also showed great potential at the tournament, which represented the first competitive matches for many of the players. The girls worked together as a team and put their best foot forward for the season ahead. Cristina Estevez '19led the team with consistent serves and assists as captain and setter during each match. The team lost to ZIS in the first and third games but worked hard for a win against International School of Lausanne (ISL) in the second game.

All in all, both teams showed immense potential in this early-season tournament. The coaching staff was impressed with the girls’ display of character and determination and is looking forward to a great season.
